Abstract

This study examined binge eating disorder in culinary professionals in relation to body mass index (BMI) and perceived health. Thirty-two graduates, aged between 35 and 40, from a private culinary school in Mexico City participated. The Binge Eating Scale (BES) and the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) were used. The average BMI was 28.31; 21.9% had a healthy weight, 47% were overweight, and 31.2% were classified as obese. According to the BES, 25% exhibited severe binge eating. A significant negative correlation was found between the BES and the SF-36 (r = -0.88), indicating that higher levels of binge eating are associated with lower perceived health. Additionally, a positive correlation was observed between BMI and binge eating (r = 0.53), suggesting that binge eating is linked to a higher BMI, which in turn impacts quality of life.
